If you are looking up the full-load amp (FLA) rating for a US Motors D20P1G at 575 V and 20 HP, the practical answer is about 20.8 A. For a US Motors D40P1GS at 575 V and 40 HP, the practical answer is about 41.2 A. The nameplate on the actual motor is the only spec you should trust for a final decision. That applies whether you are buying a replacement or trying to decide whether a servo motor repair is worth doing.

I review motor specifications and repair invoices before they go out to customers. I handle roughly 200 motor-related records a year. Servo Motor Repair: Where Hidden Costs Hide

Instead, the tag may list continuous current, peak current, torque, and drive voltage. A good repair quote should start by identifying those values and then checking the motor against them.

I have learned to ask one question before asking about price: what is not included in this estimate? A transparent repair shop will list diagnostic work, bearing replacement, encoder testing, balancing, and a test report. A vague quote that says only “repair servo motor” leaves room for an expensive surprise later. This is not about choosing the cheapest option. It is about choosing the option that accounts for the actual work.

Ask what is not included in the estimate before asking what the price is. The transparent shop can answer; the vague one cannot.

Servo motor repair is often worth doing when the motor core is still healthy. Bearing damage, encoder failure, brake wear, and broken cables are common fixable failures. If the windings are shorted and the housing is heavily corroded, replacement may be more practical. A good repair shop should be able to show you why it recommends one path over the other. If it cannot show test results, keep looking.

Brushless Motor and Stepper Motor: A Quick Clarification

A brushless motor is a motor that uses electronic commutation instead of mechanical brushes. In a brushless DC motor, the controller switches current through the stator windings to keep the rotor moving. Because there are no carbon brushes, brush wear stops being a maintenance concern. But that does not automatically make it the right motor for every job. The drive and motor must be designed to work together.

What’s a stepper motor? A stepper motor is a type of brushless motor that moves in fixed angular steps. The most common hybrid stepper design has 200 full steps per revolution, which equals 1.8 degrees per step. The controller sends electrical pulses, and the motor advances one step per pulse. That open-loop control is simple, but if the load exceeds available torque, a stepper can lose steps without telling the controller. In position-critical applications, you may need a larger motor, closed-loop feedback, or a different technology.

So all stepper motors are brushless, but not all brushless motors are steppers. A brushless servo motor normally includes feedback such as an encoder or resolver, and it works as part of a closed-loop drive. The same terminology matters when you contact a repair shop. A servo motor repair for a brushless servo is not the same job as replacing a stepper motor.

What a FLA Lookup Can’t Tell You

Here is the limitation of this article: I can give you common ranges from nameplates I have seen, but I cannot see the nameplate on your motor. Some D20P1G and D40P1GS units have different frame options, mounting arrangements, and insulation systems. Some have been rewound in the past.
