I work on the quality side of the US Motors product line. Before a motor datasheet goes into a customer submittal, I review it against the nameplate and the actual motor—roughly 200 items each year. In our Q1 2025 audit, about 8% of first submissions had a spec mismatch: the quote said one voltage, the model number said another, or the FLA was copied from an older revision. This checklist is built from those errors.
Use it when you are replacing a 575V motor, sizing a VFD, or comparing quotes from manufacturers. There are five checks.
Step 1: Start With the Nameplate, Not a Catalog Page
One search I see constantly is 'US Motors D60P1GS 575V full load amps 60 hp.' FLA stands for full load amps, and FLA changes with voltage. For a 60 hp motor at 575V, the standard three-phase table value is about 62A. For the 75 hp US Motors D75P2G, the D75P2G datasheet FLA at 575V is around 77A in most standard designs.
Do not set overload protection from those two numbers alone. They are sanity checks. The actual motor may have a different service factor, efficiency class, frame material, or speed. Look at the printed nameplate and the current PDF datasheet. If the datasheet and nameplate disagree, reject the submittal until someone explains it.
Step 2: Know What VFD Stands For and What It Adds to the Spec
If someone asks what VFD stands for, the short answer is variable frequency drive. A VFD controls motor speed by changing the frequency and voltage supplied to an AC motor. Some people call it an inverter. Fine. But 'VFD duty' is the spec I care about.
Why does that matter in a motor FLA article? Because a motor connected to a VFD does not run at one fixed point. If you have a 575V, 60 hp motor with full load current near 62A, the drive has to supply that current continuously across the operating range. If the motor is not marked VFD duty, do a separate check for inverter-rated insulation and cooling at low speed.
Step 3: Use NEC Table 430.250 as a Sanity Check
The full load current table in NEC 430.250 is my first filter. For a 575V three-phase motor, the table puts 60 hp around 62A and 75 hp around 77A. Those numbers are useful because they catch major data-entry mistakes. If a D60P1GS datasheet says 45A at 575V, that is a red flag. If a D75P2G datasheet says 92A with the same frame and speed, I would ask for the exact motor drawing before I put it into a quote.
That said, do not put table values into an overload relay setting. The nameplate wins. A high-efficiency motor can draw slightly less current than the table value. A re-rate, a different insulation class, or an 8-pole design can draw more. The table is a sanity check, not a design value.
Step 4: Verify Bearing Arrangement Before You Trust the Motor
FLA gets the drive sized, but bearings keep the motor running. Vertical pump motors and linear actuator motors are the two cases where I always ask about thrust. The motor shaft has to handle an axial load, and that load has to be supported by the motor's bearing arrangement. That is where a thrust bearings manufacturer enters the conversation.
You do not need to be a bearing engineer. Ask for rated thrust in both directions and the speed at which that rating applies. In 2023, we reviewed a replacement motor for a vertical pump application. The motor was the right frame and the right FLA, but the bearing set was for horizontal mounting. It failed before the first scheduled service. That was an inexpensive spec fix that should have been caught in the review.
Step 5: Compare a Servo Motor Price India Quote as a System, Not a Motor Price
Servo motors do not show up in the same voltage and FLA table as the D60P1GS. They are rated by torque rather than horsepower, and the external drive electronics are usually a bigger part of the system. When someone asks for servo motor price India, I read that as a system question.
A servo motor price India quote may be lower than a North American option. The comparison is incomplete until you add the matching drive, encoder feedback cable, connector type, commissioning package, import duties, and warranty support. More than one project has stalled because the motor price was competitive but no one could match the existing servo drive. Ask for the speed-torque curve and the exact feedback interface before buying on sticker price.
Three Mistakes I Keep Finding in Motor Submittals
Mistake 1: Treating the Model Number as the Revision
D75P2G is a model family, not a serial number. The motor manufacturer may add a suffix or change a drawing revision. Verify that the motor nameplate and datasheet carry the same revision before you create a spare parts inventory.
Mistake 2: Oversizing a VFD to Hide Bad Data
An oversized drive is sometimes the right engineering call, especially for high starting torque. But it does not replace the D60P1GS full load amp value. The VFD protection parameters still need the actual FLA. If you enter the wrong value, a larger drive does not solve it.
Mistake 3: Approving a Datasheet Without a Date
A motor datasheet with no revision date is an uncontrolled document. In Q1 2025, I returned three first submissions because the attached PDF was a preliminary version. Ask for the manufacturer revision and the date before you approve it.
Bottom Line
Check the nameplate first. Use the table values as a filter. Then check the VFD spec, the bearing thrust rating, and the total system cost. None of those five steps is complicated, but skipping one can turn a $3,000 motor replacement into a $25,000 field service issue.
